How to Draw Doraemon – Step 1 – Basic Shape and Form 1st Pass

- Draw a circle for the head
- Draw a cross on the circle as if it was a sphere
- Draw a square for the body
- Draw half an oval for the left thigh
- Draw an oval for the right foot, and another oval the the left foot behind the thigh
- Locate and draw a circle for the left hand, then draw the left arm connecting the hand to the body
- Locate and draw a circle for the right hand, then draw the right arm connecting the hand to the body
- Draw a two circle side by side for the eyes, and a small circle below the eyes for the nose
- Mark off the key lines where shape of the mouth should be
- Draw a circle for the bell on the necklace
- Mark off the key lines where the pocket should be
Tip: Double check the locations of your shapes with the reference, use your pencil as a measuring tool to correct any proportion that is off.
Glossary – Key Lines: The primary lines that defines a shape, like anchor marks that set the placement of the form and the orientation of each side on the shape
How to Draw Doraemon – Step 2 – Basic Shape and Form 2nd Pass

- Create the shape of the hat by first drawing the key lines then draw the fill lines
- Draw the key lines for the shape of the jacket
- Draw the fill lines for the shape of the mouth
- Draw the whiskers and the iris
- Draw the key lines for the belt and the fill lines for the pocket
Glossary – Fill Lines: The secondary lines that connect and fill the gap between each key lines
How to Draw Doraemon – Step 3 – Refined Pencil Drawing

- Refine the fur and details on the hat, draw the little anchor symbol
- Refine all the facial features
- Refine the jacket and draw all the details on the jacket
- Draw all the details on the belt buckle and the bell necklace
- Continue refining rough sketch until all lines are definitive
Tip: Draw lightly, use short and repetitive strokes, slowing draw heavier as you commit to more definitive lines.
How to Draw Doraemon – Step 4 – Trace Pencil Lines with Marker

- Trace the pencil lines with a black marker
- Use an eraser to erase all the pencil lines so that only the marker lines remain
Tip 1: Rotate the paper to draw smoother lines
Tip 2: Break up long lines with shorter strokes, connect the short strokes to make line look continuous.
Tip 3: Push lighter on the maker to create thinner lines for small details.
Tip 4: hold down the paper with your other hand to avoid wrinkle and creases on paper
Tip 5: Use a sticky roller to clean up the eraser rubbings.
How to Draw Doraemon – Step 5 – Color in Midtone

- Double check your light source location, analyze all the highlight areas and leave it uncolored
- Color the hat fur pink
- Color the gold trims on the jacket and the bell on the necklace with golden yellow
- Color the body blue
- Color the hat, jacket, necklace, tongue, mouth, and the nose red
- Color the belt brown
- Color the white part of the body gray, remember majority of this color area should be left uncolored
Tip: Color evenly, and follow direction of your strokes with the form of the object

- Color the shadow area of pink with dark pink
- Color the shadow area of golden yellow with brown
- Color the shadow area of blue with dark blue
- Color the shadow area of red with brown
- Color the shadow area of gray with black

- Thicken the profile lines with a black marker
Glossary – Profile Lines: The outer borderlines of a major form like head, body, arms and legs. Detail lines like pattern on the body and facial features are usually not consider profile lines.
